hard to get past 1st screen

Jeff Smith
I am trying to VNC to a Linux VM that has been set up for VNC. I can ssh into the command line interface of this VM with no problem. I can VNC to the same VM but the first thing I see is a colorfully tiled window with a date and time. I cannot figure out what combination of keys bring me past this tiled window. Has anyone seen this before?

It would help if you uploaded a screenshot somewhere and link it here.

But I think your VM is set up that way it creates a new X session for
any VNC client connecting, and displays that new X session via VNC. In
that case, what you see is the X login screen of the Linux inside the VM.

Kind regards

Sounds like the screen saver blind. You move the mouse to the bottom
center of screen, click and hold, then drag the blind up to show what was
behind the blind.

They put that in a couple versions ago, and it took some time to figure it out.
Don't know how VNC would show it, but on the real screen it shows a little
arrow going up in the bottom center to kind of give you the ideal.

This sounds like a new Gnome3 desktop you're trying to log into.  As such, hit the space bar to get to a login prompt.  Btw, I think this is hugely intuitive as it doesn't say what to do at all!

Re: hard to get past 1st screen

I am getting closer.  I can click on menu bar choices but not on non-menu bar places. For instance, I can get to "Terminal" from menu bar but not to the contents of the terminal when the terminal opens.

Re: hard to get past 1st screen

On my classroom machines, I generally install the xfce desktop, and have
the vnc use that instead of the gnome3 desktop. Some of the fancy things
cause problems.

You modify the .vnc/xstartup file to look like this.
#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
exec  /bin/sh /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc #   X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
#vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
startxfce4 &
#twm &
