connection issues

Eyal Lebedinsky
I am new to this list, and started using TighVNC recently over a
distance (I often use it over a local connection well).

I connect from Linux to Win/XP. NortonIS is active if it matters.

When I connect I sometimes get no response. At other time, after
a long pause I get the first line
Connected to RFB server, using protocol version 3.8
followed by nothing for a very long time (minutes, I do not
always wait).

At other times the process continues with
        Enabling TightVNC protocol extensions
        Performing standard VNC authentication
        Password:
        Authentication successful
but may hang for a long times (a few minutes) at any stage.

The target machine has the server running in advance. It is
idle.

Since there is no screen activity so far, why do I see such delays?
I understand that there are some tcp exchanges and nothing else.
Should some configuration of NIS2008 help?

When I do get through the connection is very slow. Nevertheless,
an issue that I have is that often a simple mouse click on my side
does not show up on Win for many minutes (I am often on the phone
with the person I am assisting). Why is that? I assume that there
should be little activity (screen does not change) so the click
should arrive quickly.

In all of the above I (linux) am the only active user, the Win/XP
user just watches.

I could not find good doco on the server configuration panels, just
some notes with the screenshots. Is there a good reference for the
options? A document with some recommendations?

TIA

It looks like a problem with TCP connectivity. I don't think there's
something wrong with TightVNC in your case.

There should be no such delays in any configuration, provided that the
connection is good enough.

As for the server's configuration options, there is context help
available in the configuration dialog (via the F1 key or the button with
question sign in the window caption).
