Xfce Desktop issues with TightVNC Client

c.monty
hi!

I've installed TightVNC Server successfully on xubuntu 7.10.
I can setup a client connection to the server.

However, there are 2 issues with Xfce Desktop:
1. The icon for "Manual Network Configuration" on panel 1 (top) is not there, instead an empty rectangle is displayed.
Is this somehow related to user permissions of the client connection?

2. All programs that are started from the icons on the desktop quit immeditally (it is at least reproducable with file manager "Thunar"). If you start the same program in terminal, everything works.
What's causing this issue?

Here my ~/.vnc/xstartup:

#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
#x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x40+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
xfwm4 & xfdesktop & xfce4-panel & xfce4-session
#x-window-manager &

Thx

Re: Xfce Desktop issues with TightVNC Client

Jeroen De Wachter
Hi,

I don't have a lot of experience with xfce, although I have on occasion
configured a tightvnc server to use it.
However, I always started xfce through the startxfce4 script, instead of
starting its components seperately.

Also: I don't know what the vncconfig command does?

#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
#x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x40+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
#xfwm4 & xfdesktop & xfce4-panel & xfce4-session
startxfce4 &
#x-window-manager &

Kind regards,

Jeroen De Wachter

Re: Xfce Desktop issues with TightVNC Client

Rohit Patil
c.monty, What is the color depth that you start your VNC server with?
I have seen similar problems with a depth of 32 while connecting to
VNC servers on Linux. A depth of 24 fixed my problem.

Jeroen, vncconfig can be used to configure (as the name says) VNC server:

vncconfig - configure and control a VNC server

I don't use it for anything besides clipboard configuration. The newer
version(s) seem(s) to require this program to be started if you want
clipboard transfers to work. It usually starts with the following
items turned-on/checked:

- Accept clipboard from viewers
- Send clipboard to viewers
- Send primary selection to viewers

-Rohit.
