Internet -dynamic ip

Eric Shiau
Newbie question, Two machines A (server) and B (viewer) both are connected to internet with dynamic ip and without router and firewall.  What should I type in in "VNC server" text field on client (viewer) in order to view server machine?

Re: Internet -dynamic ip

Morgan Storey
machines A's Ip address. As this is dynamic without getting the person at A's end to tell you what it is, you could use a service like the one at www.dyndns.org to get a subdomain that points to whatever the dynamic ip is (updates via a client).

Some points though, VNC is unsecure, it is plain text, perhaps you should tunnel it over ssh or a vpn of some kind.
Also there are other security issues with VNC that come to the fore occasionally, such as the client initiated authentication issue that RealVNC 4.11 had. It is best to at least change the port of the VNC server, better yet lock all ports down on the routers at each end, and use hamachi ( https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp?lang=en) to make a vpn between the two computers (no static ip, or dyndns needed) then run VNC across the hamachi VPN.

Regards
Morgan Storey.
